The secret in their eyes (2009) - Spanish

This Argentinian crime drama in Spanish has all the ingredients that you would want for a family movie night - an unsolved crime , an unsaid love and  a tumultuous phase in Argentinian politics - the final legs of the dictatorship of Isabel Peron.

Benjamin Esposito is a judiciary employee who is investigating the rape and murder of  Lilliano Colloto. He is helped by his alcoholic partner ,Pablo Sandoval ,and his new department chief ,Irene Menendez. Though all the leads point to a thug Isidore Gomez and though Esposito manages to get Gomez behind bars , he is released because of his political connections - being part of a right wing death squad that has the blessings of the ruling junta. The murder is foisted on two immigrant workers whose confessions are extracted under torture and the case is closed

Lilliano`s husband Ricardo is distraught that his wife`s killer got away scot free and tells Esposito that the killer should have got a "life sentence" and goes away terribly upset at the injustice. During the course of all this , Esposito and Irene develop feelings for each other but Esposito does not say it out because Irene is engaged to be married to a more affluent person.

Meanwhile , Romano, the corrupt Police official who helps Gomez go free , hires him as part of a hit squad to kill Esposito .Sandoval , Esposito`s friend gets killed in a case of mistaken identity and Esposito goes away into hiding for 10 years with Irene`s cousins.

When Esposito resurfaces after 10 years he finds Irene married , Romano killed , Gomez missing and Ricardo living in a secluded farm far away from the city. When he questions Ricardo about Gomez , Ricardo says that he had killed him long back. Not convinced with this story , Esposito spies on Ricardo and discovers that Ricardo has kidnapped Gomez and has kept him locked up in a solitary cell in his farm all these years , punishing him by not speaking a word and serving him his  "life sentence".

Esposito gets back to Irene`s office and narrates  the whole story to her. He then tells her that he wants to say something more. Irene knows what he is about to say and demurely asks him to close the door behind him.

An amazingly must watch movie which is quite honest and simple. It has been beautifully set in the backdrop of Argentina in 1975 and captures the somber mood of  a nation in turmoil ,quite vividly.

It has an IMDB rating of 7.7 and is available on Amazon Prime

A Perfect Day (2015 )

Somewhere in the Balkans around 1995 , a group of Aid workers seek high and low to get a rope to haul out a corpse that has been deliberately flung into a well. This forms the skeleton for  the story of A Perfect Day .While this is strictly not a foreign language film , it is the English movie debut of Spanish director , Fernando de Leon de Aronoa .                                                          While the plot sounds quite simple , it slowly meanders into various sub plots that eventually connect back to the main plot. Mambru , the protagonist , is an NGO aid worker working in a conflict zone in the Balkans. His team comprises of B - a wild middling character , Sophie - a fresher and a local interpreter Damir.
