Mucize ( 2015) - Turkish

 

Mucize means "Miracle" in Turkish and this 2015 movie  a beautiful story that almost borders on a fairy tale. This movie is set in a remote Kurdish village nestled among the picteresque Anatolian mountain ranges of Turkey . Beautiful vistas , soothing background music and a sterling performance by the cast ( i sometimes think they might be the actual inhabitants of that cute village ) blend elegantly  to provide a wholesome treat for the entire family. 


Mahir Orgetmen ,a school teacher gets transferred to a remote village due to the volatile political situation in 1960s Turkey. Little does he know that remote actually means walking across two mountains , after the bus drops him in the middle of nowhere.He finally reaches the little Kurdish village  - where no school exists and girls are not allowed to read.

Mahir , though initially miffed and raring to go back, agrees to stay and build a school if the girls are allowed to attend school. The school is built by the villagers, with the help of Kurdish rebels from the mountains and the children start their schooling Mahir somehow coaxes 34 year old Aziz, the intellectually and physically challlenged son of Davut Elci the village chief ,to attend school with the other kids.Through Mahir's incessant efforts and tender coaxing , Aziz progresses steadily albeit slowly.

Soon Davut`s sons get married one by one. The bride selection ceremony ,where the elder women of the vilage visit other villages and test the would be brides is hilarious .But it provides us a peek into the quaint  customs that the Kurds have preserved for centuries. Knowledge of the Quran , kitchen skills and possessing a steady gait are the qualifying crieria for the girls  .Finally the ones "chosen" by the village babushkas are escorted by their parents to join their husbands.

An unexpected turn of events suddenly upturns Aziz's simpleton existence.The chief of another village pledges his daughter , the beautiful Mizgin , to Aziz in gratitiude to Davut  for saving his life. The wedding takes place and Aziz and Mizgin start their life together. But things take a nasty turn when people in the village start mocking the beautiful Mizgin for throwing away her life to become the wife of an intellectually challenged Aziz . Unable to take it any longer, Mizgin and Aziz run away from the village leaving behind a letter that conveys their anguish.The schoolteacher ,Mahir, also leaves as his tenure is completed.

Many years pass and finally the "miracle" happens. Mahir returns to the village suddenly one day ,with his family. There is another family that accompanies them - a completely cured and handsome looking Aziz & his lovely wife Mizgin. Aziz reunites with his people and is happy to be back home where his heart lies. 

This Mahsun Kirmizigul directed movie  is definitely wholesome treat for the entire family and a must watch.

This Argentinian crime drama in Spanish has all the ingredients that you would want for a family movie night - an unsolved crime , an unsaid love and  a tumultuous phase in Argentinian politics - the final legs of the dictatorship of Isabel Peron.                                             Benjamin Esposito is a judiciary employee who is investigating the rape and murder of  Lilliano Colloto. A Perfect Day (2015 )

  Somewhere in the Balkans around 1995 , a group of Aid workers seek high and low to get a rope to haul out a corpse that has been deliberately flung into a well. This forms the skeleton for  the story of A Perfect Day .While this is strictly not a foreign language film , it is the English movie debut of Spanish director , Fernando de Leon de Aronoa .                                                          While the plot sounds quite simple , it slowly meanders into various sub plots that eventually connect back to the main plot.
